Carrie O’Connor, the 38-year-old Boston University lecturer who died in an elevator accident in an Allston apartment building on Monday, was trapped in the doorway of the first floor and elevator, according to a report obtained the Boston Globe.

Police who responded to the scene found O’Connor trapped, the report obtained by the Globe said.

The cause of O’Connor’s death was traumatic asphyxia and the manner was determined to be accidental, police said Tuesday afternoon.

Neighbors reportedly said O’Connor was carrying a large box that she was trying to load onto the building’s old elevator but that it wouldn’t fit.

“It was horrifying,” Leanne Scorzino, who lives on the first floor, told NBC10 Boston. “It wasn’t a cry. I can’t even describe what it was. I went out in the hall because I genuinely thought someone was being murdered.”

The Globe report states that the elevator was last inspected on March 26 and a 60-day notice was issued to fix a stop switch. But that the company certified on April 22 that the necessary repairs had been made.

O’Connor was remembered earlier this week as a world traveler who loved baking and her two cats.

“She said you shouldn’t be able to graduate college without traveling,” O’Connor’s mother, Christal O’Connor, told BU Today. “I don’t even know all the different countries she’s been to.”

As a vegetarian, she enjoyed baking and experimenting with different recipes, her mother said, particularly breads, but also English muffins, soft pretzels, cinnamon rolls, brownies, cookies and cakes.

She was a French lecturer at the university had just started her second academic year as a full-time BU lecturer.

She also previously taught at Bentley University, LSU, MIT, Northeastern and Tufts, and covered topics spanning French language to French for business to French literature and culture through gastronomy, the report said.
