Al Roker shows Oswego love as he leaves hospital, misses Thanksgiving parade

SUNY Oswego alumnus Al Roker showed his alma mater some love on Thursday as he left the hospital after being treated for a blood clot in his leg and lungs. Roker posted a video of himself walking down a hospital hallway while wearing a green, yellow and grey Oswego State polo shirt.

“All right, this is my version of the Thanksgiving Day Parade,” he said. “Getting ready to leave the hospital. Time to blow this taco stand. Woohoo!”

The “Today” show weatherman missed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time in 27 years, but said he got home in time to watch a little of the NBC broadcast while still wearing his Oswego shirt.

“Yay Al!!!! Love love this video!!! Parade was not the same without YOU!!!” Hoda Kotb wrote on Instagram.

“Yasss!! Now we are especially thankful for you too!!! And all those doctors and nurses who took care of our dear one!” Jenna Bush Hager seconded.

“Yay Al! Happy Thanksgiving!” former “Today” show star Katie Couric added.

Roker and NBC did not say when he expects to be back on TV, but he looked to be in high spirits Thursday and later shared a photo from turkey dinner with his family. The 68-year-old broadcaster has dealt with a number of health issues in recent years, including prostate cancer, a shoulder surgery due to arthritis in 2020 and a hip replacement in 2019.

Roker started his TV career in Syracuse at WHEN-TV, now known as CNY Central’s WTVH-5, in 1974 while still a student at Oswego State. He’s has been at the “Today” show for more than 25 years as a weatherman and co-host of the NBC morning show’s “3rd Hour Today,” on top of hosting shows on the Food Network and the Weather Channel, plus acting in movies and TV shows like “Zombieland: Double Tap,” “Sharknado 5,” “Kung Fu Panda 3,” “The Simpsons,” “Seinfeld” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”
