There Are Some Wild Theories About Who Shot Jack In 'Virgin River'

Virgin River fans didn't think the show could get any more dramatic—until it did. Boy oh boy, it really did.

The second season of the Netflix drama was filled with shocking twists and turns from the very first episode. We're talking about love triangles, drug wars, unplanned twins, murder cover-ups, surprise villains, missing persons, medical scares, and one very delayed "I love you." (That last one was from Mel to Jack. Finally!)

But all of that drama pales in comparison to what happened during the season two finale's devastating final moments: Jack was shot.

Luckily, Mel found him—still alive—on the floor of his bar soon after the attack happened. Then the episode ended, leaving Virgin River fans with one major question: Who shot Jack?

Before we get to that, let us first say that the show's leading man will probably (definitely!) survive. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Martin Henderson—the actor who plays Jack—urged fans to "never lose hope."

"Monroe is an amazing nurse practitioner so he's in good hands. He's off to a good start there," Martin said. "If you want to be shot, you're pretty [lucky] for your love interest to be a nurse so he's off to a good start. But anything can happen on Virgin River."

Ain't that the truth. Still, the first trailer for season 3 shows Jack alive and well—so we can all breathe a sigh of relief. See for yourself!

Since we're pretty confident that he will be okay, let's get back to the identity of Jack's shooter. There are a handful of potential suspects, so we rounded up the best fan theories about who shot Jack in Virgin River's cliffhanger finale. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Calvin is the most obvious suspect.

This one is almost too obvious. Jack spent most of season 2 trying to shut down Calvin's illegal marijuana business, giving the drug dealer a clear motive to seek deadly revenge. But even the Virgin River cast thinks that would be too easy to figure out.

"The writers are certainly leading you to believe that it's the Calvin group of people, but maybe if there's a season 3, there will be a twist in that," Alexandra Breckenridge told Entertainment Tonight.

It also could've been Brady.

Brady shooting Jack would certainly be a plot twist, given their connection after serving in the Marines together. But for that very same reason, it seems unlikely. Brady was unable to kill Spencer under Calvin's command, so why would he murder one of his oldest friends?

That said, Jack was shot in the stomach—which in the world of TV and movies means it wasn't a shot to kill. So it's possible that it was Brady, and he's trying to send Jack a message without actually taking his life. (Or maybe he just has bad aim.)

We can't rule out Charmaine.

This is the most unlikely theory of them all, but it's supported by a reliable source: The man who plays Jack.

"It was definitely Charmaine," Martin told Entertainment Tonight. "Do the math. I 'm convinced."

They say that Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and Jack did seriously shut down Charmaine right before he was shot. But would the mother of his children really want her twins growing up without a father? And would Charmaine actually want Jack dead for being with Mel instead of her? That seems a bit too dramatic—even by Virgin River's standards.

Or maybe it was someone else.

There's always the possibility that a stranger could've shot Jack. Think about it, though: Would a total stranger really go unnoticed in a town like Virgin River? Doubtful. A more plausible option is that it was an unsuspecting acquaintance who was just passing through.

Yes, we're talking about Jamie. Sure, she seems nice—but the mysterious restaurateur said herself that the food industry is viscous. Could Jamie be trying to sabotage Jack's Bar so she has a shot at starting her own successful business in Virgin River? She already tried to get rid of Preacher by offering him that job in San Francisco, so Jack would be the only one standing in her way.

Or maybe it was someone else entirely. The twin brother of Paige's (Lexa Doig) abusive ex-husband, perhaps? What about Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale)? Or even...Mel's sister? It all sounds crazy—but maybe it's just crazy enough.
