In the long-running escapades of the Mystery Machine and its teenage inhabitants, Scooby-Doo and the Gang have long entertained audiences since their debut on the animated television series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! in 1969. There have often been rumors about the sexual orientation of one of the primary characters, particularly in the live-action movies and various reboots. According to a report by Variety, the character of Velma has officially come out as a lesbian in a new Scooby-Doo movie entitled Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! which was released to streaming on October 4, 2022.

A clip from the new movie has dropped on Twitter and viewed more than 2.8 million times, showing Velma completely flabbergasted and quite speechless when she spots a new character, Coco Diablo, noting how stylish, pet-friendly, brilliant, and sophisticated Diablo appears to be while she wears glasses similar to that of Velma herself. While holding a box of the famous Scooby Snacks that everyone’s favorite Great Dane seems to devour, Velma can’t seem to hide her true feelings for Diablo in front of Fred and Daphne as it appears to be love at first sight.

While never officially confirmed until now, Velma has long been assumed to be a lesbian in many iterations of the Scooby-Doo series of television shows and films throughout five decades. Writer and future Marvel Cinematic Universe director James Gunn, who wrote the live-action films Scooby-Doo in 2002 and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in 2004, even originally wanted Velma to confirm her sexuality in those films but these characteristics never made it to the final edit.

The character was embodied by actor Linda Cardellini in the live-action movies and ends up having a boyfriend by the end of the 2004 sequel, negating Gunn’s intentions to highlight Velma’s almost obvious sexuality. It is not surprising that such an ambiguous yet potentially controversial aspect of a character would be removed, but still sort of disappointing.

It is also notable that the show has been judged to have developed such subtext, considering it was developed in the late 1970s by Hanna-Barbera and endlessly retooled before eventually becoming a hit.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! may be the first time that longtime fans of the characters finally are able to witness Velma and her confirmation of being a lesbian, but it also features updated storylines that seek to advance the adventures of the Mystery Inc. friends. Voiced by actors Matthew Lillard, Grey DeLisle, Garfunkel and Oates alum Kate Micucci, and longtime voice actor Frank Welker, the new film is available for streaming and digital download on Amazon Prime Video and other subscription streaming service platforms.

Lillard in particular has voiced or played the character of Shaggy Rogers in multiple versions of the Scooby-Doo universe, as well as appearing in hit films like Scream and The Descendants, while Frank Welker has provided the voice of Scooby-Doo since 2002 and Frank Jones since the first series in 1969, making him one of the most prolific actors to take on the franchise.
