Amid many years of scandals, rumors, and growing popularity, the comedian's exit has sparked many questions. Many are speculating why the star chose to leave now, so what is the real reason Davidson left SNL?

Pete Davidson Released A Statement About His Departure

On Instagram, Davidson posted a video of him hugging comedian Jerrod Carmichael with a lengthy caption reading:

"This video was taken eight years ago, Jerrod sent it to me last night, and it made me super emotional in the best way. In the video, I had just gotten back from doing my very first update and sketch. It’s crazy to think that today I’ll be doing my last one. When I got the show, I was 20 years old, and I had no idea what I was doing. I still don’t, but especially back then. I wasn’t really a sketch performer. I was just a stand-up. I knew I could never keep up or go toe-to-toe with a Kenan Thompson or a Kate McKinnon, so I was super scared at figuring out what I could possibly bring to or do for such a historic, respected show and platform. I figured, since I’m a stand-up, I’ll just try my stand-up and personal bits on ‘Weekend Update’ as myself, and I’m so glad I did. I got to share so much with this audience and literally grow up in front of your eyes. We were together through the good and the bad, the happiest and the darkest of times. I owe Lorne Michaels and everyone at SNL my life. I'm so grateful, and I wouldn’t be here without them. I appreciate you guys always having my back and sticking up for me even when that wasn’t the popular opinion. Thank you for always believing in me and sticking by my side even when it seemed comical. Thank you for teaching me life values, how to grow up and for giving me memories that will last a lifetime. SNL is my home. I’m so happy and sad about tonight’s show. For so many reasons I can’t explain. Can’t wait to be back next year in a Mulaney musical number.”

He's Been Rumored To Be Leaving For A While

Back in February 2022 the actor missed three consecutive episodes, which is where the rumors started. During this time Pete and his new girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, were facing lots of threats from her ex-husband, Kayne West, including lyrics in his songs that he could "beat Pete's a--". Many speculated the rapper was the reason he no-showed. It was later confirmed that Davidson was filming for an upcoming movie.

Pete Davidson's Contract Was Up

Davidson's contract at SNL was up at the end of 2021. The King Of Staten Island star opened up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that after seven seasons he was ready to leave. He continued on to say the environment at the sketch show wasn't the best and that he thinks a lot of his co-stars thought he was dumb stating, "I do like the randomness of it and I usually play very dumb characters. So, it’s very easy for me, I have one character that I’ve done in my seven years on the show, which shows how f–kin’ great I am. His name is Chad, and he’s very dumb, and every response is just, ‘OK.’ And I see a lot of myself in Chad."

Did Pete Davidson Do It For Love?

Pete is no stranger to dating incredibly famous women, and the scandals that go along with it, but his relationship with Kim Kardashian basically set the world on fire. The couple's romance even started when the SKIMS founder hosted the show in October 2021. She has been very open about her support in his decision to leave the show saying she thinks it's the "best decision of his career" and continuing that it was a great opportunity for him, but he has a huge fan base now and lots of projects lined up.

Pete Davidson Has His Own Series Now

Peacock recently greenlit Bupkis, a show that Davidson will write, produce and star in. Lorne Michaels' production company will be producing the show that is claimed to be a Curb Your Enthusiasm type meta-comedy about Davidson's life. Sopranos matriarch Edie Falco is already signed on to play Davidson’s mother. At the NBCUniversal Upfronts earlier this year, the star told press: "I can’t believe we are going to be on Peacock, the streamer that is responsible for so so many great shows like MacGruber and the reruns of The Office. Was Pete Davidson Not Being Paid Enough?

SNL has been a landmark of TV since 1975. According to Celebrity Net Worth, an actor on SNL for this long would be making roughly $15,000 per episode or about $315,000 per season. At Davidson's level, he very well could be earning more than that, but SNL has claimed they never go above $25,000 per episode for any actor, that amount is for top performers. This is obviously a very large amount, but compared to other TV actors this amount is rather low.

While the news of his exit came as quite a shock, the comedian has in fact been in the process of leaving for a couple of years now. His long absences on the show to film other projects were very noticeable, and he was in fewer and fewer episodes as seasons went on. Davidson said in his final words on the show that he feels like he came full circle on the show, but he'll always be grateful for his time there and that it is only goodbye for now.
