Queer Eye fan favourite Tom Jackson, star of first episode, dies aged 63
Queer Eye fan favourite Tom Jackson, who appeared in the first-ever episode of the rebooted Netflix show, has died aged 63.
Jackson appeared as the ‘hero’ receiving a makeover from hosts Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk and Antoni Porowski.
The show announced his death on their official social media accounts on Thursday, writing: ‘It’s with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to a member of our Queer Eye family. Rest in peace, Tom Jackson.’
Alongside the statement the Netflix show shared sweet pictures from his episode with the team.
Jackson died on March 3 from metastatic adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that forms in the gland tissues, according to his obituary.
Cast member Tan France posted a response on Instagram, writing: ‘Such incredibly sad news.’
Jonathan Van Ness added: ‘RIP Tom ❤️’, while Bobby Berk shared: ‘RIP Tom. 😢Having a Redneck Margarita in your honour ❤️’
In his episode, called ‘You Can’t Fix Ugly’, he was seen discussing his battle with Lupus with the team, which meant he required special help with skincare and colour choices.
The Fab Five helped him prepare for a date at a car show at the end of the week, and much to viewers’ delight he later briefly rekindled his relationship with his ex-wife, Abby.
His obituary said that one of his greatest accomplishments was being ‘a Papaw to his two grandsons who were his pride and joy.’
It added: ‘A highlight of Tom’s life was being cast on the Netflix show, Queer Eye.
‘He enjoyed the notoriety and shared his experience with whoever would listen!’
Before appearing on reality TV, Jackson retired from Federal Express then worked as a dump-truck driver in Georgia.
Alongside his two grandsons, Jackson is survived by his daughter, who also appeared on the Netflix series having nominated him for the show, two sisters and extended family.
His family has asked fans to watch his episode of Queer Eye on Netflix in his honour instead of sending flowers.
