Ants deserve more respect

These African Matabele ants are carrying a wounded nestmate after a battle with termites. The rescue behavior is triggered when the injured ant excretes a chemical substance, calling for help. Inside the nest, "nurse" ants intensively lick those wounds, apply antimicrobial substances with their saliva, inhibiting infections. Without such treatment, 80% of the injured die. But with this treatment, only 10% succumb to their injuries.
