Scientists Provide Surrogate Moms to Stranded Sea Otter Pups
Sometimes sea otter pups get separated from their moms. The Monterey Bay Aquarium provides them with surrogates. Scientists at the aquarium found, unsurprisingly, that if they were reared by humans, the otters would become attached to them. Sea otter pups can become stranded from their mothers when the moms get wounded or the pups wash away in strong currents. The surrogate otters teach the pups how to be otters, serving as mentors to them. Approximately 906 otters have gone through the aquarium's surrogacy program.
