Wildfires Burn Across 7 Western U.S. States

More than 813,000 acres have burned across 7 Western U.S. states, with only 3 of the fires being contained. 34 are currently burning in Idaho, 23 in Montana, and 13 in Washington. In 2022 alone, more than 6,675,000 acres have burned, putting this year above the 10-year average. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, says it’s expecting warm and dry conditions, along with periods of lightning activity, to lead to ‘high potential for severe wildfire activity throughout the western United States through the fall.’ Studies have shown that the climate crisis, specifically increased heat and drought, has contributed to an increase in the length of wildfire seasons, as well as the frequency of fires.
