Activists Invade Cannes Festival Red Carpet To Protest Femicide

Activists have stormed the red carpet at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for a second time. A group of women unfurled a long banner and let off black smoke devices at the premiere of Holy Spider. The banner had a list of the first names of the 129 women who have been killed in France since the last film festival. According to The Guardian, the protesters invaded the red carpet before those involved in Holy Spider arrived. Video footage from the event shows security guards observing the protesters and not intervening. During the premiere of Three Thousand Years of Longing, a protester stripped off her dress to reveal the words “stop raping us”. The words were written in English on her stomach next to blue and yellow, which are the colors of the Ukraine flag. The activist was protesting against sexual violence by Russian forces in Ukraine, according to The Guardian.
