2022 Hurricane Season officially comes to an end
The 2022 hurricane season officially comes to an end on Nov. 30, but the impacts from Major Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole will be felt for years across the Florida peninsula.
This year was an average season producing 14 named storms. Out of that total, eight became hurricanes and only two intensified into major hurricanes with winds reaching 111 mph or greater. An average season according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association will produce 14 named storms, eight hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

September was an active month and produced seven named storms, including the two major hurricanes that became Category 4 hurricanes, Fiona and Ian.
There were only three hurricane landfalls this season and one short-lived tropical storm along the continental United States. Hurricane Ian made its first landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on Florida’s southwest coast and made its second landfall as a weaker Category 1 hurricane along South Carolina’s coast.
Hurricane Ian caused over $50 billion in damage and makes the cut as the fifth strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in the United States, with a maximum sustained wind of 155 mph. Hurricane Nicole holds the record as the latest calendar year hurricane to make landfall on Florida’s East Coast.
Hurricane Fiona holds the record for the lowest pressure (931 mb) recorded for a landfalling storm in Canada. Hurricane Lisa was the first landfalling hurricane in Belize in November since 1942.
NOAA's Hurricane Hunter aircraft flew over 582 mission hours to collect atmospheric data that is critical for hurricane forecasting and research this season.
Although the season is ending on a quiet note, it is not uncommon for out-of-season tropical systems to develop. Always be prepared before the next season that starts again on June 1, 2023.
