BALTIMORE, MD — Northern Virginia's spring-like temperatures are gone for a couple of days. Winter weather is back the next two nights with lows expected that are well below freezing. The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures in the low 20s with wind chill values in the teens for the Washington, D.C., region Friday night, and down to 30 on Saturday night.

The high temperature at Reagan National Airport reached 56 degrees on Thursday. But a cold front pushed through last night, bring much colder air. Highs will be in the low 40s Friday and only upper 30s Saturday before they climb to the low 50s on Sunday and Monday, the National Weather Service said.

"Cold night in store for the region with low temperatures dropping into the teens to low 20s. High pressure will keep us dry," the NWS said midday Friday. "Expect seasonably cold temperatures today, despite plentiful sunshine. The wind will begin picking up ... making for some brisk wind chill temperatures."

With overnight lows forecast to plunge the next two nights, it's important to know how to prevent your home's water pipes from freezing. Frozen water pipes in unheated basements and crawl spaces can be messy and expensive to fix. But if you do wake up to a frozen faucet, there are steps you can take to safely thaw out a frozen water line without burning down the house.

There are three common causes of frozen pipes:

1. Quick drops in temperature

2. Poor insulation

3. Thermostats set too low
