The Iowa State Patrol recommends avoiding travel Tuesday.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla told KCCI that road conditions were deteriorating very rapidly across the state. Visibility and road conditions have contributed to several crashes in the state, Dinkla said. The patrol said troopers had assisted in 56 crashes and 174 calls for assistance from motorists between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The Iowa Department of Transportation reports slick roads over most of the state. More than 500 DOT plows have been out working to clear roads statewide.

The National Weather Service says travel could be very difficult Tuesday. Hazardous conditions will especially impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. The weight of the snow and ice may also result in sagging tree limbs and damage, with power outages possible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Des Moines officials said more than 200 workers will be on snow duty Tuesday, along with more than 100 plows. Streets have already been covered with 450 tons of treatment for the incoming snow.
