Downed trees, power outages, closures as severe storms rip through DMV

Parts of Virginia have been slammed by severe thunderstorms Wednesday, bringing widespread damage, downed trees, road closures, downed utility lines, power outages, and even canceled flights.

Severe Weather

StormWatch7remains on Weather Alert through the evening for more blinding rain, dangerous wind gusts along, and hail. A severe thunderstorm watch should expire at 9 PM with the flood watch lingering until 11 PM.

Canceled Flights

Dozens of flights have been canceled at BWI, IAD, and DCA, according to the latest report from Flight Aware.

Power Outages

Nearly 120,000 power outages have been reported across Virginia.  The Mid-Atlantic region has nearly 200,000 outages.

Fauquier County seems to be the hardest hit with more than 17,000 outages. 

Storm Damage/ Road Closures

Fauquier County Department of Fire and Rescue reports numerous trees down on houses and straight-line winds up to 70 knots widespread throughout the county.

The Warrenton Town Manager tells 7News the damage is townwide with some areas having concentrated areas of damage.

In Fredericksburg, Lansdowne Rd. is closed to through traffic near Shannon Dr. due to downed utility lines.

Downed trees forced the closure of Route 2 in Caroline County and Route 2/17 near Shannon Airport in Spotsylvania County.

Stafford County has closed Rt. 1 near Layhill Rd. for downed trees and utility lines. The county reports trees down at: Rock Hill Church/Mountain View; 100 block of Ramoth Church; Monument; 800 block of Mountain View; Jett Drive; 1500 block of Forbes, Falmouth Waterfront Park/River Road, and 700 block of White Oak Road.

Culpeper County Emergency Services reports trees down and road closures, asking that drivers avoid the following areas:
