Hurricane warnings issued in Okeechobee County as Ian approaches South Florida

Hurricane Ian is now a Category 4 storm as it brings "life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds and flooding in the Florida peninsula," according to the National Hurricane Center.

Parts of Okeechobee County and the Treasure Coast are back inside the cone of uncertainty for Hurricane Ian after it shifted east Tuesday.

All of our area is under watches and warnings as Hurricane Ian rapidly intensifies while moving toward the state. Okeechobee County is under a hurricane warning at this time.

Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Florida in preparation for the storm.

WPBF 25 First Warning Weather meteorologists forecast South Florida will begin to see the effects of Ian with severe weather risks Wednesday, and Thursday. WPBF 25 News has declared all them First Warning Weather Days.

A tornado watch has been extended for Palm Beach, Indian River, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Tornado warnings were issued throughout Tuesday night and are expected to continue as the outer bands of Hurricane Ian rotate over South Florida.

A possible tornado in Delray Beach caused hospitalizations and a building to be evacuated.

This comes as another disturbance churns in the Atlantic.

As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, Ian is 75 miles west-southwest of Naples, Florida. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 140 mph and is moving north at 10 mph.

Ian is now a Category 4 storm as of 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Okeechobee County and parts of the Treasure Coast are in the cone of uncertainty.

The storm is expected to slow down Wednesday and possibly make landfall later in the day. It could then move over central Florida later Wednesday into Thursday before emerging over the Atlantic by late Thursday.

The middle of Longboat Key to Bonita Beach, including Charlotte Harbor, could see storm surges up to 12 feet, the NHC forecast. The deepest water will occur to the immediate coast near the right of the hurricane's center.

Central and western Florida could see up to 16 inches of rain, with the rest of the peninsula seeing about 8 inches. Tornadoes are possible across the Florida peninsula as the area is under a threat for severe storms Wednesday and Thursday with areas under tornado watches.

  • Bonita Beach to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay
  • Dry Tortugas

A hurricane watch is in effect for:

  • North of Anclote River to the Suwannee River
  • Okeechobee County

A tropical storm warning is in effect for:

  • Cuban provinces of La Habana, Mayabeque, and Matanzas
  • Lower Florida Keys from Seven Mile Bridge westward to Key West
  • Flamingo to Bonita Beach
  • Suwanee River to the Anclote River
  • Volusia/Brevard County Line south to Jupiter Inlet
  • Lake Okeechobee
  • Palm Beach County
  • Martin County
  • St. Lucie County
  • Indian River County

A tropical storm watch is in effect for:

  • North of the Suwannee River to Indian Pass
  • Altamaha Sound to Volusia/Brevard County line
  • Deerfield Beach to Jupiter Inlet

A storm surge warning is in effect for:

  • Anclote River southward to Flamingo
  • Tampa Bay

A storm surge watch is in effect for...

  • The Florida Keys from the Card Sound Bridge westward to Key West
  • Dry Tortugas
  • Florida Bay
