Houston Public Works officials plan to temporarily lower Lake Houston half a foot ahead of Tropical Storm Beta that’s making its way to the toward the Texas coast and may likely douse the region.

The lake sat at 42 feet and would be lowered to 41.5 feet, officials said in a statement Saturday night, adding they lower it when the National Weather Service predicts more than 3 inches of rain expected within a 48-hour period. It was not clear when the lake would be lowered, but officials said it takes a day to lower the lake a foot.

Officials said people should secure property along the shoreline.
