Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. But once postal workers in Lincoln, Neb., trudge through snowfall from the winter storm that covered their town earlier this week, they’ll have nowhere to put the mail they’re delivering.

A snowplow wiped out 28 blocks of mailboxes along Normal Blvd., leaving locals wondering what to do next. City officials told ABC’s Nebraska affiliate they’re trying to remedy the situation.

“We've been back out both on Monday and then yesterday verifying with a photo log and again kind of going door to door to make sure everyone has contact information and make sure everyone understands the process to file a claim," Lincoln transportation official Lonnie Burkland told KLKN-TV.

A Nebraska man identified as “Mike" said he spent $140 to erect a new mailbox after his was plowed out of commission. He’s hoping to be compensated by the city, but isn’t happy about the way things were handled early on.

"I just wish they would have contacted some of the homeowners first rather than me coming to look," Mike said.

The snowplow driver who took out all the mailboxes had neither been spoken with nor disciplined by the city at the time of the report. Officials said they will take a look at how their plow operators are trained.

As for the busted mailboxes, city officials plan to do the right thing. Still, there’s no guarantee area residents will be compensated for their losses. According to local law, negligence against the city will have to be proven in each case.

“I know several of them have had temp fixes that are back up already,”Burkland said. “We just want to make sure we make that situation right.”
