Rockton chemical fire: What we know about blaze at Chemtool in Illinois

Bursts of flames shot into the sky across the Rockford region early Monday morning. A chemical fire broke out at Chemtool's plant about 7 a.m. 

Multiple fire departments responded to the blaze.

What caused the fire at Chemtool in Rockton, Illinois? 

According to Chemtool's owner the Lubrizol Corporation, it's unclear what caused the fire. 

"We will be working with local authorities and with our own risk management team to determine what happened and identify any corrective actions. We will share more details as they are know," the corporation said in a statement.

Was anyone injured in the Illinois fire? 

According to Lubrizol officials, all "on site are safe and accounted for." 

About 70 employees were evacuated from the building prior to the arrival of firefighters.

No employees were injured, but one firefighter received minor injuries.

Where is Chemtool? 

It's located at 1165 Prairie Hill Road, Rockton. The facility is on the village's northwest side near South Beloit. It's about 15 miles north of Rockford.

Are people being evacuated? 

Yes, Rockton Fire has ordered a mandatory evacuation at 9:40 a.m. Monday due to the chemical fire. This affects everyone within a mile radius of 1165 Prairie Hill Road. The public is asked to avoid the area.

About 150 homes were evacuated.

Where is Rockton, Illinois? 

Rockton is about 95 miles from Chicago and 81 miles from Milwaukee. 

What products does Chemtool produce? 

Chemtool is a grease and lubricant manufacturer.

The Rockford Fire Department hazardous materials team is on the scene conducting air quality analysis.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is working with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and other local partners to do in-depth testing to measure the impact to air, water and land.
