Slick roads possible Thursday morning as ice threatens Gaston, Cleveland

The Gaston Gazette 2/17/2021 Bill Poteat, The Gaston Gazette

Major League Baseball players are reporting to spring training in Florida, but here in Gaston and Cleveland counties winter is still very much with us.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the two counties beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday and continuing through 7 p.m. today.

The NWS reports that rain will begin falling after midnight Wednesday but is likely to change over to a period of freezing rain around 4 a.m. That period of freezing precipitation could last for several hours.

In a forecast discussion on its website, however, the NWS noted that, "As usual, it is tricky to determine just how far temperatures are going to fall."

Computer guidance models strongly suggest, however, that areas in both counties north of I-85 are likely to receive enough ice to make roads slippery and travel hazardous for at least a few hours Thursday morning.

The NWS notes that ice accumulations should, at worst, be no greater than around two-tenths of an inch, which would lead to minimal impact on trees and powerlines.

In contrast, the Weather Channel forecast for the Gastonia-Shelby region predicts that temperatures will remain above freezing for the entire night and that only a cold rain will fall across the area.

Both forecasts predict that up to an inch of rain could fall on the two counties from the time precipitation begins early Thursday morning until it ends shortly after sunrise on Friday morning.

The forecast is more grim across the foothills and mountains of Western North Carolina where temperatures are expected to be lower and more frozen precipitation is expected to fall.

A winter storm warning has been issued by the NWS for all of the foothill and mountain region.
