A big rig fire that had spread to the surrounding trees and brush along Interstate 5 near Lake Shasta has been knocked down, firefighters at the scene reported on emergency radio traffic.

Firefighters at the scene of the blaze said it "has spread into the brush and it's going pretty good," according to emergency radio traffic.

The firefighter at the scene requested an additional engine to help fight the fire.

A passenger in the truck reportedly had chest pains and was suffering from smoke inhalation, according to scanner traffic.

The incident was first reported just before 5 p.m. and the fire was spreading into the surrounding woods about a mile south of the O'Brien Rest Area in the northbound side of I-5.

The fire had grown to about a half-acre, according to an official at the scene.
