The Katakwi district chairperson, Geoffrey Omolo, has directed leaders at the lower level to improve the supervision of government schools in a bid to ensure quality education in the district.

According to him, local leaders such as LC 1 and 11 chairpersons, councillors, parish chiefs and sub-county chiefs should visit each of the schools within their jurisdiction at least once a week or a month.

"The move is aimed at checking the rate of absenteeism in schools as some teachers abandon duty and continue drawing the government salary," he said.

His call comes after Uganda opened schools on January 10 after two years of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
