Tokyo stocks open higher on Dow gains, weak yen

Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday, tracking gains in U.S. Dow Jones index late last week, with export-related issues boosted by the yen's weakness against the U.S. dollar.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 228.37 points, or 0.98 percent, from Friday to 23,639.00. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 16.06 points, or 0.99 percent, at 1,633.75.

Gainers included marine transportation, rubber product and metal product issues.

At 9 a.m., the dollar fetched 105.43-44 yen compared with 105.34-44 yen in New York and 105.30-31 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.

The euro was quoted at $1.1715-1715 and 123.51-58 yen against $1.1713-1723 and 123.44-54 yen in New York and $1.1715-1717 and 123.36-40 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
