Heartburn occurs when stomach acid moves up into the oesophagus, causing a burning sensation in the lower chest. For digestive fluids, going up is always the wrong direction.

Stomach acid can make you uncomfortable in many ways, such as bitter taste, swallowing problems, feeling a lump in your throat and belching during or after meals, according to Bulletproof.

You may experience heartburn because of a food or drink that triggers acid reflux, intense activity or stress. Simply lying down immediately after a meal may also lead to burning in your chest. 

But those are just what trigger acid reflux. There is a main reason why acid climbs up from the stomach. 

What Really Causes Acid Reflux? 

Health experts commonly recommend taking medications to reduce your stomach acid. However, reducing stomach acid is not always necessary. 

Acid reflux occurs not only because of too much acid in your stomach. It may also happen because you have very little amount of the digestive fluid in your body. 

In the stomach, a group of muscles works to maintain the fluids. If you lack stomach acid to digest food these muscles would suddenly allow fluids to reach the oesophagus, leading to acid reflux. 

Other Factors That Trigger Acid Reflux

Your age may also cause more frequent acid reflux or heartburn. As people get older, the production of stomach acid also becomes less.

Having some medical conditions can also contribute to the condition. Low thyroid function, H. pylori infection, SIBO and adrenal fatigue can affect stomach acid production.

How To Check If You Have Low Stomach Acid

Early in the morning before eating your breakfast or drinking anything, do this to see if you are at risk of having heartburn or acid reflux. 

First, prepare a timer. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to 4 oz water and drink it. Immediately start your timer and weight for five minutes.

Normal amounts of stomach acid commonly causes people to burp within two to three minutes after drinking.
