The festival takes place on Makar Sankranti (the end of winter solstice and beginning of longer days) each year. Uttarayan is celebrated across Gujarat, with Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Nadiad being the major centers of kite-flying. Everyone takes to the rooftops and roadways to fly kites and compete with their neighbors.
