JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is gearing itself up for local government elections later this year and it will use by-elections in April and May to test its systems and COVID-19 protocols.

A total of 45 by-elections across 37 municipalities will be held in all nine provinces.

“We have accepted that we will conduct the general elections under the COVID-19 environment and therefore, basic preventative actions that should be taken by individuals and institutions to ensure that there's no transmission of the virus when we conduct the elections," Electoral manager of the IEC, Mawethu Mosery said.

"The conditions are simple: Social distancing, sanitising, wearing of masks and ensuring that there are no large gatherings at the voting stations, we are focused on that. These two by-elections will provide a real platform for us to test those protocols and their effectiveness.”
