The ANC’s head of elections Fikile Mbalula says part of the reason the party saw a drop in voter support during the local government elections is because there was an overwhelmingly negative sentiment, mainly due to COVID-19.

Mbalula held a media briefing at the ANC’s headquarters in Luthuli House, Johannesburg on Thursday, 25 November 2021.

“We have not convinced society that we are doing something about corruption. In the middle of the pandemic there were reports that PPEs [personal protective equipment] were embezzled‚” he said.

The party suffered several blows this week – with the DA having taken over all three metros in Gauteng – and the party coming close to also losing the eThekwini municipality. The ANC received 46% in votes during the municipal polls – this is the worst the party has performed since the dawn of democracy and also failed to clinch coalition agreements with key parties.

“Now, it is renewal or death. The ANC will die if it doesn’t renew. What are the elements of renewal that we have begun to implement? We have not convinced society that we are doing something about corruption”

Mbalula: The ANC ‘heavily’ affected by low voter turnout

NEC member Fikile Mbalula has admitted the ANC hasn’t managed to convince people they’re addressing matters including corruption and internal battles.

According to Mbalula, the party was always going to be affected by low voter turnout at the recent polls.

“The ANC was affected heavily by the storm of lack of voter turnout. There are factors — [having the election] on Monday. But do you want to use that as an excuse‚ no‚ we accept that we are faced with a bigger challenge and what is that challenge? If the ANC does not implement comprehensively its renewal programme the people will never be on our side‚”
