JOHANNESBURG - Social Security Agency, Sassa, and the Post Office will give South Africans an update on Thursday, on progress made regarding grant payments.

A week ago, acting Sassa CEO, Pearl Bhengu, and the Minister of Social Development, Susan Shabangu, briefed Parliament about the state of readiness to migrate the nation's social grants scheme from Cash Paymaster Services (CPS).

The agency said about 2.5 million beneficiaries will be affected if the contract is not extended. On Tuesday, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng lambasted Sassa for requesting the six-month extension.

The contract was declared invalid in 2014, but the Constitutional Court in 2017 extended it to ensure grants continue being paid.

The extension expires at the end of March when the Post Office is meant to take over payments.
