Kaizer Chiefs are still sweating over the future of Njabulo Blom, but there are things they can do to mitigate all of the risks involved. As things stand, Blom will walk away from the club for free when his current deal expires in June 2023. So what are the options for the Amakhosi board?

Kaizer Chiefs: Three possible replacements for Njabulo Blom

Right now, it’s difficult to see any viable central midfield options for Chiefs in the 22-27 age bracket. However, there are a few experienced options that could bridge the gap until they find a longer term solution.

Chiefs were linked with Jali not so long ago, although any rumours linking Sundowns stars to any of the other clubs in the “Big Three” need to be taken with a pinch of salt. However, this one might have legs. The 32-year-old midfield general, as things stand, will be a free agent in June. Why Jali, you say? Chiefs could do with Jali’s oodles of top-level experience and know-how, and he could double up as a mentor for Mshini.

Jali has oodles of top-level experience and that could brush off on Mshini. He’s also ready-made for the big occasions and would be a top operator for at least two more years. By that time, Chiefs will likely be promoting another youngster from their academy, or looking to the transfer market for long-term prospect.

The elegant Sundowns man is still only 26, but it feels as though he’s been around forever. He’s certainly gifted enough to play for any top club, the main question revolves around his temperament and consistency. He’s certainly an enticing option though. What Rivaldo lacks in dynamism and energy, traits often associated with Blom, he makes up for in poise and panache.

He’s been with the Brazilians for five-and-a-half year now, so perhaps a change of scenery could do him good. Injuries have plagued Rivaldo in recent times though, and that will undoubtedly be something for Amakhosi to consider. Coetzee hasn’t played a single DStv Premiership match in 2022-23.

Elegant left-footer Mokeke is now 32. His versatility provides the option of cover at centre-back and even left-back, but he’s most comfortable in the holding midfield role. Will Cape Town City be open to offers though? He’s made 11 DStv Premiership appearances this season, and is a key operator under head coach Eric Tinkler.
