Canada's NACI recommending AstraZeneca vaccine not be used for people under the age of 55 | FULL

Shelley Deeks with Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) on Monday said NACI was recommending that the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine not be used for adults under 55 years of age. Those 55 and older can still receive the vaccine with informed consent. She said there have still been no cases of serious blood clots reported in Canada. She added that there have been no such cases reported following administration of the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccines. Canada's deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo added the pause was being taken as a precautionary measure. He also said that amid reports of rare blood clots associated with low platelet counts, those who were vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine more than 20 days ago do not need to be concerned, but those who got the shot less than 20 days ago or anyone vaccinated going forward should seek medical attention should they experience symptoms starting four days or more after vaccination. He said the symptoms of vaccine-induced prothrombotic immune thrombocytopenia (VIPIT) include shortness of breath, chest pain, leg swelling, persistent abdominal pain, sudden onset of severe or persistent worsening headaches, blurred vision or skin bruising not at the site of vaccination. Earlier Monday, Prince Edward Island announced it was suspending use of the vaccine for those aged 18 to 29 who had appointments for shots in pharmacies. They said the appointments were on hold pending further information from Health Canada and NACI. Alberta's public health officer, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, also announced a pause of the AstraZeneca vaccine program for those under the age of 55, with Manitoba and Quebec also pausing rollouts to those under 55. Ontario and Saskatchewan have been briefed on the updated guidance but have not yet made any decisions. However, Hinshaw also stressed there were no reports of blood clots happening in Alberta or Canada.
